Health Benefits
Almonds: Almonds contain the most nutrients and protein of all nuts. They are rich in phytochemicals (plant components that promote heart and vascular health), and a leading source of vitamin E, magnesium, protein, fibre, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and iron. As with most nuts, they are very low in saturated fats, with most fats present as monounsaturated. Studies have shown that eating almonds can help reduce weight and diabetic problems.
Cashews: With the lowest fat content of any nut, cashews still provide a healthy amount of monounsaturated fats, as well as plenty of protein and fibre. They are rich in copper, magnesium, and selenium, and also contain the amino acid tryptophan, which has been called ‘Nature’s anti-depressant’, and breaks down in the body into niacin and serotonin – both of which provoke feelings of relaxation and reduce anxiety.
Pecans: Pecans are a rich source of Vitamin E, magnesium copper, potassium, zinc and fibre. They contain more than 19 vitamins and minerals.
Styrian pumpkin seeds: An alkalising seed, these pumpkin seeds are a powerhouse of minerals and vitamins, proteins and Essential Fatty Acids. They help with urinary and prostate issues, maintain digestive health, and are good for skin and teeth also. They also contain the ‘antidepressant’ amino acid tryptophan.
Cacao nibs: Cacao nibs are simply dried broken pieces of the cacao bean (Theobroma cacao). They have a deep chocolatey taste, slightly nutty and bitter. Cacao contains four neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, anandamide and phenylethylamine (PEA) ) that are all associated with reducing anxiety and depression and promoting feelings of well being.
Sultanas: Arguably a favourite natural sweet, sultanas also provide a significant amount of anti-oxidants of several types and plenty of fibre and minerals such as calcium, iron, manganese, magnesium, copper and zinc.
Coconut: Coconut is a complete food rich in calories, fibre, vitamins and minerals. It is rich in the saturated fatty acid lauric acid, which increases the ‘good’ HDL cholesterol in your blood. It has a high content of medium-chain triglycerides, which your body breaks down to use as energy instead of storing as fat.
